The first settlement, La Navidad, was founded in 1492, followed by Santo Domingo, established in 1498 by Bartholomew Columbus. Santo Domingo became the first permanent European city in the Americas and served as the capital of Spain's New World empire. From this historic city, explorers and expeditions departed to discover and colonize much of the American continent. The Dominican Republic is home to many "firsts" in the Western Hemisphere.
